Hamakua Hotel

This hotel exceeded expectations in every way. The rooms were very clean and updated, bed was super comfy. They clearly put lots of thought and care into renovating this place and it shows - everything feels very high-end. The ocean views were impeccable. What stood out the most was the food: the 7 course dinners that are included were high-end restaurant quality (menu is created by a Michelin star chef). The dinners were served at a big table with all the hotel guests together and it was very cool to get to know our neighbors over dinner. We didn’t even know about the dinners when we booked our stay so needless to say it was such a nice surprise that they don’t just include complimentary dinner, but the highest quality dinners imaginable. The hotel also has a private rainforest hike that leads to a private beach. The staff were all awesome and made this stay very memorable for us. We definitely plan on coming back and will recommend this hotel to family and friends.

Wonderful stay at Hamakua Hotel on the Big Island. We wanted to explore the other coast and stumbled across Hamakua. The hotel grounds are immaculate, views top notch, the hotel fully stocked, the rooms are super comfortable, and the chef, Joseph, makes incredible food for dinner. Valerie and her team make you feel like your at home your entire stay. If you are looking for stunning views, local villages, and solitude, this is the place to be. The only downside for the property is that even though there is a gorgeous trail to the beach, it's not swimmable (which we knew ahead of time) but same can be said for the entire Hamakua coast. It's more for the views, the very laid back vibe and hiking/exploring than swimming and spending time in the water as water on the coastline is very rough. Can't say enough good things about this new property and that the team that runs it.

My girlfriend Stephanie and I just returned from 5-days of adventuring on the Big Island, which culminated with a 3-night stay at the Hamakua Hotel. Wow - - We were both totally blown away by the hotel! The recent room make-over was fabulous, the new infinity pool is incredible, as is the trail that leads down to the ocean. Well done! We were warmly greeted and cared for by Val and the rest of the staff, and needless to say Chef Joseph cooked up some delectable culinary delights - - it was a 5-star experience from beginning to end (a sentiment that was shared by all of the other guests who were there). It is super impressive what they have created at the property! Highly recommended! Best hotel on the Hamakua Coast, hands down!

Hidden away north of Hilo 30 minutes is this marvelous B&B on the edge of a cliff overlooking the ocean. Originally a home, it now has 6 bedrooms to offer. We had #3 and had the best view I think. Morning breakfasts were wonderfully prepared by the chef who was very attentive and personable. Our room were immaculate and the beds comfortable. I noted it seemed the resident team took efforts to provide superior quality amenities. The grounds were beautifully maintained with many coconut palms and gardens. Very enjoyable and relaxing to walk around.

We had an amazing experience at Hamakua Hotel! It is simply a hidden gem. The rooms are tasteful and spacious. The grounds are peaceful and elegant. Special shout-out to Valerie for making us feel so welcome and Joseph for an amazing dinner!

From the moment we arrived until our reluctant departure, every moment at Hamakua was nothing short of magical and far exceeded expectations. We were welcomed with warm smiles and genuine aloha, and instantly felt at home. The staff was attentive, thoughtful and the resort grounds are exquisite — lush, serene, full of places to explore that are and filled with natural beauty. We especially enjoyed our early morning exercise, then breakfast, and walking the private trail to the beach to start our day. Our room was a sanctuary as it was elegantly appointed, impeccably clean, and filled with a Hawaiian touch of comfort and style. Waking up to the views of the ocean and spending quiet moments on the private lanai were highlights. The resort amenities were outstanding as well. The pool allowed you to swim laps or just some time for peaceful relaxation and the sauna and cold plunge were restorative. It all felt luxurious without ever being pretentious. I cannot overstate how much we loved dining here. The chefs on-site are in a class of their own: creative and deeply committed to flavor and presentation. Every happy hour on the main lanai and amazing meal felt like a special occasion. One of the things that made our stay feel blessed was how well located Hamakua is for exploring. Akaka Falls is just a mile away (a must-see!), and the Hawaii Botanical Gardens left us breathless. The town of Hilo and the local beaches were only about 15 minutes away, making day trips effortless. We loved alternating between relaxing on property and adventuring out into all the Hamakua coast offers. By the time departure day came, we genuinely didn’t want to leave. Hamakua offered us the perfect blend of tranquility, luxury, natural beauty, and superb hospitality. If you’re seeking a Hawaiian escape where every detail is treated with care and every moment feels curated, this is the place. Mahalo nui loa to Valerie (the GM) and the entire team. We’ll be back.

We had such a lovely stay here from beginning till the end. Valerie (MD) was caring so well for us, but basically also everyone else on property. Stunning view, really beautiful room and nice amenities. The breakfast did not offer a huge choice of options but we were so satisfied with what we got every single day and still talk about how much we miss it. And I am a picky eater … everything very fresh and tasty. After our five nights here we really felt home already, it was hard to leave. I would really like to emphasize that the 7 course dinners on Tuesday, Friday and the chefs choice dinner on Saturday are included!!! (thanks to Joseph you also did such a great job) The cocktails in the happy hour before the dinner were amazing, we had such a good time and can only highly recommend Hamakua - will do sure come back if were on hawaii / big island again.

We recently stayed at Hamakua Hotel for our honeymoon, and it was beyond perfect—truly the most peaceful, rejuvenating, and soul-soothing place I’ve ever been. It felt like a hidden gem tucked away in paradise. The views from our hotel balcony were straight out of a movie—lush greenery, ocean waves, and sunsets that took our breath away. The hotel offers so many thoughtful amenities: a brand-new pool and hot tub, a private trail leading to a stunning ocean view, delicious breakfast served every morning, a 7-course dinner crafted by a wonderful chef, a cold plunge and sauna, and so much more. Every detail was designed to make guests feel relaxed and cared for. We felt incredibly comfortable, safe, and welcomed throughout our stay. I’m so grateful I found this magical spot, and I absolutely plan to return. If you’re looking for a peaceful escape with luxury, charm, and unforgettable views—this is the place.
